For Glynis Carter Brewster ’12, earning an MBA from Mount Saint Mary’s University was never just about adding another degree. It was the beginning of a transformation that reshaped how she leads, builds relationships and creates opportunities for others.

Today, Glynis serves as the executive director of human resources at Providence Health and Services, where she has earned seven promotions since beginning her career as an administrative assistant. She is also the founder of her professional development coaching business, Glynis Carter International, and serves as president of Mount Saint Mary’s University’s MBA Association of Professionals (MAPs). She credits much of her success to the lessons, lifelong relationships and confidence she gained during her time at the Mount.

Her commitment to helping others build those same connections reflects the University’s emphasis on preparing students for lifelong career success through mentorship, experiential learning and professional networks — goals that are central to Mount’s (M)POWER career readiness program.

Entering the MBA program more than 15 years ago, Glynis found herself immersed in a diverse cohort of professionals representing a wide range of industries, cultures and life experiences. Having grown up in a predominantly Black community, she describes the program as exposing her to a “rainbow coalition” of perspectives that challenged her assumptions and strengthened her ability to lead across differences.

If there is one thing Glynis would change about her time as a student, it would be applying what she learned even sooner. While the rigor of the program left her eager to simply celebrate graduation, she quickly realized that the strategic frameworks and managerial insights she gained at the Mount became the very tools that fueled her rapid rise in corporate HR.

Just as impactful as the coursework were the relationships she built. Her MBA cohort became a close-knit support system that continues to influence her career today. Those connections grew into lasting relationships with faculty, fellow alumnae and University leaders. Recently, Glynis collaborated with MBA Director Lester Reams, JD, DPA, to connect current students with accomplished alumnae and career development opportunities, while continuing to partner with the Office of Alumnae Relations to strengthen alumni engagement.

Creating meaningful connections between students and experienced professionals has become one of Glynis's greatest passions. By opening doors to mentorship and expanding students' professional networks, she is helping strengthen the same culture of career preparation that (M)POWER is building across the University.

Now in her second year as president of MAPs, Glynis is channeling her expertise back into the very community that helped shape her career. Under her leadership, MAPs automatically welcomes every graduating MBA alum into a professional network designed to keep graduates connected while creating opportunities for mentorship, networking and leadership. Through community events, accomplished guest speakers and partnerships across the University, MAPs extends the spirit of (M)POWER beyond graduation, helping alumnae continue learning, growing and supporting one another throughout their careers.

Her passion for giving back extends beyond her leadership at the Mount through her professional coaching practice. Last spring, after delivering a presentation to MBA students, Glynis offered complimentary coaching sessions to help graduates navigate today’s increasingly competitive job market.

Glynis’s blend of business acumen and compassion defines her coaching style. She describes herself as a "mama bear" whose passion is helping early-career professionals navigate a workforce where technology and algorithms often filter out qualified candidates before they have the chance to connect with employers. Her mission is to help young professionals — especially women entering the workforce — master the art of what she calls "intentional networking."

As she frequently tells her clients and students, the secret to standing out in a crowded market is simple: "Get in front of people, not algorithms." By encouraging meaningful relationships instead of transactional networking, Glynis helps early-career professionals become truly unstoppable as they begin their professional journeys. She is now translating those philosophies into a book, sharing the lessons that have guided her own career and her mission to help others find fulfillment in theirs.

For Glynis, giving back is a natural extension of everything she gained while she was a student at the Mount. Whether she is coordinating the upcoming MAPs event on July 11 featuring accomplished Mount alum Justin Key '13 MBA, collaborating on career development initiatives or mentoring a new generation of graduates, she remains committed to bringing students, alumnae and professionals together in meaningful ways. In doing so, she continues to embody the spirit of (M)POWER, proving that once you become part of the Mount community, your capacity to empower others only continues to grow.
